Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is pain which occurs in the wrist as a result of pressure being placed on the nerves that run through your wrist. It can for some be very painful and for some quite debilitating.

Individuals with CTS often experience pain in the thumb, middle finger and forefinger and in severe cases require surgery. Early intervention by a Chiropractor can reduce the need for surgery.

The Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome include:

  • During the night you may experience pins and needles in your hand or you may feel like your hand has “gone to sleep”.  We are more susceptible to CTS in the evening because our bodies are more relaxed during sleep which means you are more likely to flex our wrists when sleeping.
  • Following from the pins and needles it may become more difficult for you to pick up objects with your thumb and forefinger or even clench your fist.
  • CTS sufferers may initially experience pain, numbness, an itching or burning feeling in the hand. Often these symptoms can radiate from the wrist area up the forearm towards the elbow.
  • One or both hands may be affected.
  • The more advanced the CTS the greater the pain and everyday normal tasks become more difficult.

Why see a Chiropractic for CTS?

By seeking treatment by a Chiropractor during the early stages of CTS, we can gently mobilise the median nerve pressure and use manipulation techniques to relieve the pain and over time improve and strengthen the hand and wrist.

We will also provide some guidance on how to reduce the impact of repetitive tasks you may conduct to help relief the problem of CTS, give you regular exercise which will help strengthen the hand and wrist for increased mobility.

Seeking early intervention for CTS may help avoid surgery, which is why at YVIC we provide cost effective treatment options to help you get back on the road to better health. After all no one likes having surgery and the recovery process can sometimes be a long one.
